We all know disasters happen, whether it be natural disasters or global pandemics, but usually, they don’t hit so close to home for most of us and hence, with Liberia recording its First Corona Virus case on March 15, 2020; the Drug Policy Coalition of Liberia and partners have thereof developed the Liberia Ghettos Outreach Initiative-LGOI aimed at provide support for disadvantaged young people who are substance users living in ghettos/ streets across Liberia.
The program seeks to provide temporary feeding, increase advocacy especially for females substance users against SGBV and unwarranted brutality against substance users by state security officers, enhance psychosocial counselling and support for substance users in Liberia during this COVID-19 and beyond.
The initiative will basically focus on COVID-19 awareness/sensitization prevention for substance users, motivation and psychosocial counselling to discourage and minimize drug abuse among substance users and promote peace-building.
The initiate will also enable DPCL to develop a database and enhance data collection in the ghettos.
An analysis of relevant stakeholders will be carryout to establish strategic partnership with institution such as Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, Liberia National Police, Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection, Ministry of Health, National Public Health Institute of Liberia, and other partners for the successful implementation of the project in Liberia.
