Liberia Drug Policy Reform Advocacy Project

Drug policy reform in Liberia seems far from been realized, owing to the fact that there is limited advocacy around policy review, lobbying with key stakeholders and members of the National Legislature, technical support, and funding to ensuring that drug laws and policies are reviews to meet the current reality.

The project is an evidence-based policy reform advocacy aimed at enhancing and increasing engagement with policymakers and key stakeholders that seeks to reform Liberia Drug Law. The primary goal of the project is to review and amend the Liberia drug Law to take into account evidence-based prevention, treatment, care, and support for substance users that take in to account public health and human rights.

Liberia Ghettos Outrach Initiative

We all know disasters happen, whether it be natural disasters or global pandemics, but usually, they don’t hit so close to home for most of us, and hence, with Liberia recording its First Corona Virus case on March 15, 2020; the Drug Policy Coalition of Liberia and partners have thereof developed the Liberia Ghettos Outreach Initiative-LGOI aimed at providing support for disadvantaged young people who are substance users living in ghettos/ streets across Liberia.

The program seeks to provide temporary feeding, increase advocacy especially for females substance users against SGBV and unwarranted brutality against substance users by state security officers, enhance psychosocial counseling and support for substance users in Liberia during this COVID-19 and beyond.

The initiative will basically focus on COVID-19 awareness/sensitization prevention for substance users, motivation, and psychosocial counseling to discourage and minimize drug abuse among substance users and promote peace-building.

The initiate will also enable DPCL to develop a database and enhance data collection in the ghettos.

An analysis of relevant stakeholders will be carryout to establish a strategic partnership with institutions such as Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, Liberia National Police, Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection, Ministry of Health, National Public Health Institute of Liberia, and other partners for the successful implementation of the project in Liberia.

SAFE-PROJECT

The Substance Abuse Free Environment (SAFE) project is an initiative of the Drug Policy Coalition of Liberia-DPCL aimed at enhancing and strengthening evidence-based drug prevention at the community level through participatory approach.

Through the project, we work with community structures including families, faith-based organizations, schools, and community based youth-led organizations as resource partners.

SAFE’s first priority is understanding the issues around substance abuse in our community before identifying and implementing research-based best practices to address those issues. How do we know what needs to be addressed? SAFE’s initiatives are developed in response to issues identified through youth survey data, statistical data, and community input.
